🍊 Ordinary Legalization Process: If the country to which you are sending your official documents IT IS NOT PART OF IT of the Convention, that is, it is not found in the previous list, the correct and legal process required is the Legalization instead of the apostille.

Legal Specifications of the Apostille

  • The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs only apostilles documents issued by Colombian authorities. Therefore, documents issued in another country cannot be apostilled in Colombia.
  • The documents to be apostilled must be strictly original, with the signature of the competent authority previously registered in the database of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • A document that has been apostilled does not require subsequent procedures or legalizations to be valid in any of the countries that are parties to the Hague Convention.
  • If the country where the document will be presented explicitly requires it, the translation of the original apostilled document must also be apostilled. However, this is determined by each regulatory body, so we always recommend verifying whether this secondary procedure is mandatory for your specific situation.
  • Remember that you can complete the document apostille process yourself, without intermediaries, 24 hours a day (every day of the week). To do so, simply visit [website address/website/etc.]. the apostille procedure and legalization section online of the Chancellery.
