The Russian language is difficult to understand and its 33-letter Cyrillic script is very different from the Latin we use.
Russian is the language of the Slavic branch most widely spoken, along with English, Spanish and French, it is considered an international language. During the Cold War it was, in fact, taught in schools as a compulsory foreign language in Eastern Europe. Along with Ukrainian and Belarusian, it belongs to a group of Eastern Slavic languages and is spoken by 300-400 million people, of whom about 200 million are native speakers.
Written with the Cyrillic alphabet, Russian is the official language of many countries of the former Soviet Union, especially in the Central Asian republics, such as Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, but also in Southeast Europe. It is also prevalent in many other countries, such as Germany, the US, and Israel. In the schools of the former GDR (German Democratic Republic), Russian was considered the first foreign language and its knowledge was and continues to be very popular in Germany, especially in the eastern Oder.
